Can anyone explain why my B12 blood levels would be very high when I'm homozygous for the FUT2 mutation, which means I do not absorb B12 as well through my intestines? I'm wondering if I should be supplementing with methylcobalamin with this mutation but am hesitant due to my high blood levels of B12.

Actually, you probably have the polymorphism rs492602 (C;C or A;A) causing better intestinal absorption of B12, making your plasma level 1.5x higher. That is the problem with Livewello that just because you are homozygous and it shows red ...does not mean it is a bad thing. I too was confused by this. I am homozygous for all 3 FUT2 genes on the Livewello variance report. FUT2 rs602662 (G;G) will lower your plasma levels. Further if you have MTHFR C677T rs1801133 (A;A) you are not absorbing folic acid and so the B12 builds up in your system with nothing to do, so this too may cause higher B12 levels.

I switched to a sublingual hydroxycobalamin and added the mineral Lithium Orotate 5mg (not to be confused with the high dose prescription lithium carbonate.) The mineral salt, Lithium Orotate, drives B-12 into the cell. After switching to that protocol for a few months, my functional physician did an MMA test and my B-12 results were perfectly in range. Lithium Orotate is available over the counter. You can purchase it from Amazon. Might be worth a whirl!

Just as JF6507 said, it may not be getting into the cells. Cynocobalamin is the largest b-12 molecule, with methylcobalamin smaller, hydroxocobalamin being smaller and adenocobalamin the smallest. I cannot tolerate methylcobalamin so I use the other 3. Each as a slightly different use.

Your blood would only be showing signs of deficiency only after years and years of severe deficiency. B12 levels are generally well maintained in the blood. There are other ways to test for a deficiency though; talk to your functional medicine practitioner.

Thanks, JF6507! I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm homozygous for TCN2. Do you know if that means I should supplement with methylcobalamin?
